X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Post-Release

It's a thudding dud.

Singer really botched this one. Everything is so emotionless and bland. Issac monologues, mostly about the same thing, the entire film. His performance is muddled and depressing. He gives the Horsemen no motivation, which I thought was the whole point of casting Issac, to be persuasive and enticing. But he's just a bad guy, that wants to kill most of the Earth, to wittle out the weak. So think Ultron with a bad performance.

There's no sense of urgency, no new action we hadn't already seen by 2010. We spend way too much time with characters we're tired of, trying to control their powers that we've seen them master since the first film. Going to locations that we are all too familiar with. This should be a big, sprawling universe with so many possibilities. Why are we visiting Alkali Lake for the forth time?!

The 80's setting is wasted too, just the hairdos we've seen in trailers, and a shot of Knight Rider on tv, I think.

Sounds like I WILL be skipping this! So proud of myself.

I think it's time the franchise says Farewell to Bryan Singer. He is too obsessed with the same Magneto/Xavier clash and likes to introduce a bunch of new characters but failed to develop them, and then drop them in the next movie except for a small group that he keeps in every film. Magneto is the same old doing the same thing in every movie (and X-Men still fell for his treachery). JLaw is really miscast as Mystique, and we are still waiting for a Cyclops who is a real leader like he is in the comics. Until Singer leaves, though, we'll just be getting the same kind of movie every time.

Sigh. It looked bad, but I was hoping it would surprise me and be decent.

No you weren't you LOATHE this crap!

I loathe only the stuff you like, Freeman. That's the game we play.

Seriously, though, I have a soft spot for the X-Men flicks.

For my taste they really dropped the ball losing Vaughn. He was the injection this series needed.
Vaughn was a change of pace, at least, though FIRST CLASS is still a really wonky flick.

I wonder how his DAYS OF FUTURE PAST would have played.
By wonky I trust you mean the best of all of these.

No. Definitely not.

If it was just Xavier and Erik, the film would be pretty groovy, but the JLaw Mystique stuff is nearly all garbage and drags the film down.

X2 is still the best of these flicks by a good margin.
There's something about these movies specifically that ages them like bread.
I often find Vaugn's directorial presence on flicks even more soulless than Singer's.

There was a time when I was batshit in love with X2, rated it along with SPIDER-MAN 2. Now I can't sit through any of them before FIRST CLASS.

I agree that Lawrence and Mystique's overall story is annoying. But I love the relationship built between Eric and Charles. I love all of the Hellfire Club. The kids actually make me feel like I'm watching a group from the comics. The overall comraderie and ribbing. And I've always been crazy for Banshee so seeing him finally do his thing (Perfect film to see him since the costumes were aces) was my ultimate fan-moment.

As far as Vaughn goes, I don't know. LAYER CAKE, STARDUST, and KINGSMAN all really work for me. KICKASS is near unwatchable, but mostly because I cannot stand Aaron Taylor Johnson's in that role. And the comics sucked, too.
I wouldn't say I'm in love with X2 (it overdoes the weepiness in places), but it hangs together well on a character and structural level, and has nice moments sprinkled throughout. I'll take it over any of the MCU flicks.

Over Gaurdians of the Galaxy Winter Soldier Civil War The Avengers Iron Man 1 and 3 and the first avenger?

You ARE evil.

All that I want is ERIK LENSHER: NAZI HUNTER.  The little bit that we got of that in FIRST CLASS was fantastic.

This comes as a surprise to you? I've been so consistent in declarations of apathy for the MCU!

Though, if I was choosing what to watch on a Friday night, I'd rather sit down with GUARDIANS than X2. It's more fun, even if X2 is the better movie.
I have no idea what makes one better than the other.

I also just realized I don't care. Fuck blockbusters. Eat the slop before the slaughter you fucking pigs!

Spoilers, man. Don't go posting the post-credits teaser.

Yep, that killed it for me.  Redbox, here we come.

I think I've watched it a dozen times now. I love it in the most derogatory way. Hoult has seen better days, lovely days.

So fucking awkward.

I'm shocked. SHOCKED I tell you that another Fox/Marvel movie not named Deadpool is another smelly turd in spite of Singer.   The sooner that the rights for this and the Fantastic Four revert back to Disney/Marvel the better.

Spoil it for me: what's the awesome Quicksilver scene this time around, and is any joke made about his Rush concert T-shirt?

Is there a post-credits scene, or can I make my bladder gladder as soon as we fade out?

Quicksilver's scene is him running around the mansion as it's exploding. They made a big deal about how this sequence was so much more intense to shoot and how well it payed off, but it's more of the same. The coolest part is in the trailer, where he's sprinting across the exploding floorboards like steps.

There's a big post credits sequence, a little more telling than the pyramid building in DOFP. It sets up the next film, think after credits of THE WOLVERINE.
I have to ask... How substantial is Jackman's cameo? It struck me as I watched the last trailer that in seventeen years and eighty three X-Men movies we have never seen Wolverine and Cyclops fight side by side.

When the kids are taken to Alkali Lake, Weapon X fucks shit up. It's not Wolverine. Just like when he's this weapon in the comics: He's not a character, he's just momentum for something else to happen. A catalyst because they couldn't think of something logical or new to wow us with. "Just let him go crazy."
Speaking of pyramids, is Apocalypse's plan basically... a pyramid scheme?
Thread Starter
No, just an apocalypse. It's all about self-promoting synergy. You have to believe in yourself and accept that you need this. And you should do your part and show others they need it, too. And the more people you show, the more it trickles down to you.

It's not a pyramid, it's a reverse funnel.

Raynis is like my new favorite poster.
Raynis, for my sanity, do they explain the Stryker/Mystique eye flash at the end of Future Past. Is it Mystique who takes Logan to the Weapon X facility?
Mystique and Wolverine date for a while and Nightcrawler is the result!

Doesn't explain the German accent but whatevs!

Singer says the next film may explore the more cosmic-centered comics. Let's hope they include Cyclops' and Havoc's space pirate father and the Starjammers!

Oh yeah! And Havoc in this film is pushing 40 years old, and yet it's the same actor from FIRST CLASS. Moira is similarly aged but they joke about how good she looks.

Havok is supposed to be Cyclops' younger brother. Just another proof that they don't give a shit about the comics.

For those of you confused by Brad's love of everything, Book of Mormon is ACTUALLY really good!  Not Batman V Superman good.

Book Of Mormon is a lot of fun!
