Black Sails - Sexy Pirates on Starz - Page 9

Awesome poster!

I still refuse to believe Michael Bay had anything to do with this show.

Why's that?  Micheal Bay is synonymous with quality.

The Last Ship is pretty good too.

Bwahahahahahahahaha!

CD Underbelly is synonymous with irony, perhaps? :)

Yeah, I like Bad Boys 2 as much as the next man, but let's not overexcite ourselves here.

I'm on holiday for the week and since my Blockbuster has the first two seasons on DVD I decided to finally give this show another go after quitting halfway through Season 1.

And I just finished Season 2 and hoooooly FUCK am I glad I did. That finale was fucking tremendous.

Bummer that it's ending after Season 4 but if the following two seasons are as strong as 2 was it will go down as one hell of a show.

Let us know your thoughts on Season 3: The Rise Of Long John Silver once you've finished it.

I'm still gutted over the finale announcement. Not gonna lie, Stephens doing Lost in Space is a bit of a let down, but he seems to be making up for it in his movie roles, he had a great small part in Bay's 13 Hours and is co-leading an action movie with Gerard Butler. Hopefully he rocks up in Game of Thrones or Westworld.

Hadn't heard about this and so I popped over to Wikipedia to check that he was at least playing the cunning, nefarious Dr. Smith, but apparently he's the all-American father. Um, okay then!

Season 3 is AT LEAST as good as Season 2.  You're in for a fun ride.

Season 4, the last season, starts tonight.  Just a friendly reminder while you're setting up your DVR to record THE YOUNG POPE.

Great, great opener.

Maaaaaaaaaan, I am going to miss that theme song.

I loved the opening battle but the rest of it seemed kinda...flat.  Lots of exposition without much forward momentum.  It was good overall but not GREAT.

Question: do we know the man that finds Silver on the beach?  I don't recognize him, but I'm also not that firm on my memory of last season.

Micheal Bay's premium channel primetime pirate show is back and its still awesome. Thank you Micheal Bay, you help keep America great.

I think he's Israel Hands, who is supposed to be introduced this season. Not sure how they'll square him with the historical version, who was Blackbeard's second in command, but they've always played pretty fast and loose with the history.

That whole 'how Silver survived' sequence was fucking harrowing.

This will be the first ever show I've watched to completion, that I've watched from the premiere episode. Crazy to think about.

You and I watched a different episode, Sir! I thought this was fantastic: the opening action scene with men getting blown into pieces by cannons, Jack's close-quarter battle and narrow victory, John's harrowing escape from a watery demise, that fucking ear scene, the rise of Billy Bones as he one-ups Flint, the continuing fascinating relationship between Jack and Anne, and even that final tense scene as a one-legged man tries to crawl his way to safety through darkness. Great stuff.

The opening battle was proper but it was Silver's survival scene that had my blood pumping. Great premiere.

The show lost me quite early on in season 3. The focus on Flint, the wonderfully told backstory and the way the various plots dovetailed into the climax of season 2 was so well done that Blackbeard and Vane, Eleanor, the shenanigans over the independence of Port Royal, the slave island and the treasure just seemed diffuse and didn't engage me. Is it worth giving it another shot?

YES.

YES YES YES YES.

You missed the rise of John Silver, who really comes into his own in S3.

Billy, you done fucked up.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting that even though we've been building toward it for a while.

Two really good dialogue scenes that I enjoyed this episode: Silver doing his Silver thing with Israel Hands ("...and yet mountains of gold have changed hands because I chose it! Thousands of men in Nassau are living in fear of my return because I decreed it! Hundreds of dead red-coats in a forest not far from here because I made it so!"), and the Jack / Blackbeard scene where both men bonded over the ghost of Captain Vane.

Props to Chris Larkin as Captain Berringer. Berringer is currently occupying the space of the character I'd most like to see get a knife to the back of the head, ever since he cut off that pirate's ears last episode and he continues to annoy me here.

Billy, you fucking moron. You giant idiot.

But I have to admit, it's nice seeing these scumbags get fucked.

OK, episode 2 was everything that I was hoping for in the season premiere.  I'd argue that that was one of the best episodes of the entire series, actually.

Jesus Christ, this episode made me want to kill myself.  In a good way.

Wow, that episode was intense as fuck. They are really going out swinging with this show.

Major Character Fate Discussed (Click to show)
Dragging that poor fucker like an anchor not once, but like three fuckin' times..... and he STILL needed a bullet to the noggin to finally succumb.... Jesus that was hard to watch.  Yet not a peep out of the guy.

Total badass!

So, should we just call this show "We Should Have Listened to the Women" instead of "Black Sails" now? :)

Fuuuck.

Also kind of surprising that

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Flint and Berringer never faced off

A lot of people were expecting that since Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin are brothers (and Maggie Smith's kids! I only recently learned that).

The three draggings has to be a reference to the myth of his headless body swimming around the ship three times after being thrown overboard.

Rackham? Moar like almost Rektham. MIRite?

*booooooourns*

Crikey. That Blackbeard scene was both amazing and horrifying in equal measure. They never really made that character completely work (in my opinion) but, damn, that was a great scene for him to go out on.

My balls retracted into my body during the keelhauling.

Did not know the name of that, but now i do.  Awful!

I had always heard about the idea of keel hauling. But somehow I always thought the point was to drown you to death after enough times. I don't know why my brain never registered the idea that there are razor sharp barnacles all along the underside of a ship and you are effectively being GRATED to death. My God that was a tough scene to watch.

I'm all caught up for the final stretch.

This show is everything I wanted VIKINGS to be. Only better cause Pirates > Vikings. And, you know, the writing and performances are on a completely other level.

I'll share the rest of my thoughts later but for now, FUCK YOU WOODS ROGERS! Good god that was one of the most brutal scenes I've ever seen.

Oh man, if what Silver suspects might be true is true (and I think it might be), that's going to be a hell of an ending for Flint.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
If Thomas is alive (and it makes sense. Why would Lord Hamilton be traveling to the New World under an alias? To visit the son whose death he faked in order to ship him overseas seems like a good reason), and Flint goes and finds him, would Thomas accept the monster that Flint made himself? Their original plan was to pardon the pirates to have a ready-made colony for England at Nassau. Flint has perverted that to try and create a Pirate Republic to challenge the British Empire.
