Ideas For Future Drafts - Page 15

This 40s draft was a lot of fun, and got me to see a few fantastic films I hadn't seen before (Shadow of a Doubt and Meet Me in St. Louis, for two). If you want to run another draft, I'd be down to sign up.

Obviously there are requests for 70s and 80s, and as an old timer, I think enough time has passed to run the 70s, certainly. I was also thinking something like television shows, maybe directors. I definitely want to run the Shining cast draft at some point, too.

I'm all over a 70s draft redo (considering I missed it the first time).

I don't think I can beat my original 70s draft but I'm up for it. The 30s would be great too.

We did directors fairly within the last year or two.  Has TV shows never been done?  We should probably have separate comedy/drama categories.

I feel like TV shows was done like at least 10 years ago at this point. I'll go back into the archives and see what's what.

I've been blowing the horn for an epic TV One-Hour Drama draft for awhile now.

Yeah, last time we did a TV draft was in 2006. I think we're due.

We could also do a music oriented draft as a change of pace.

Rock and Roll banks of the 70s

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees

Led Zeppelin songs

Guitarists (any genre) or Singers (any genre)

Ooh, I like Rock Hall Inductees.

TV Draft sounds great.

Okay, here's what I'm thinking:

FEBRUARY

TV Drama Draft

The Shining Casting Draft

MARCH

70s Redux

Rock Hall Draft (to coincide with the induction)

Sounds great to me!

Good, 'cause I was having trouble thinking of rock-n-roll banks.

Depending how much blood you're trying to squeeze from the stone, you could chop TV up a lot finer.  Drama/comedy for starters, but further by season, by episode, by performance - heck, we could just do every major Emmy category but expand the field to "all time".  Villains.  Cliffhangers. Finales.  The possibilities are multitudinous, if not endless.

I was thinking of bumping everything a week and just having February be TV month - Dramas followed by Comedies.

I question the wisdom of having a cycle of continuous drafts.  Part of what makes them fun is their relative scarcity.  Having them be continuous takes away the uniqueness and might make participation into a chore.

I kind of agree with Judas. February's a short month. Let's skip it and do a big draft in March. A March Madness, if you will.

The people have spoken!

We'll look at March for either 70s Redux or a month of TV.

You made a great point regarding the appropriateness of the RnRHoF inductees having a draft in March.

The actual induction ceremony isn't until April, so I'm fine holding off on that one if need be.

Yeah, in terms of personal preference, I'd rather do TV first than Rock.

Has there ever been a "two a day" decade draft? If not the 70s are certainly the decade to try and it could help distinguish the chosen films from the previous iteration.

Oh, and if we're not 100% set on a Shining casting draft I'd like to (re)suggest Dr. Strangelove as the more appropriate Kubrick film.

I think that's a fantastic idea re: two a day.

There have been two a days.  I don't know if was ever two at the same time though, except in the bonus round.  Rather it was like two separate rounds in one day, snaked.  I think sometimes, especially in drafts with a ton of participation, that was deemed a bit much to get in in one day, but i'm up for anything.  Beats working.

I ran some '2 a day' drafts.  The ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST/THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY comes to mind as one.  Generally, drafts work best if they're completed within one week; if you stretch it into 2 weeks, that second week is a ghost town in terms of participation and enthusiasm.

The '2 a day' drafts that I did were daily snakes.  The group would go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (with the people in slot 5 going twice).  It worked out pretty slick, and I generally did the timeslots in 20 minute intervals to keep momentum going.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Same structure as the Leone draft used for the 70s redux.

LOVED that Leone draft.  There were some really nice selections in there.

Henry didn't you win the Leone draft?  Is THAT your real motivation here??

Yep, he did win that draft.

Man, it was fun buzzing through those Leone threads just now.  That may have been my favorite of the casting drafts (with YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN coming in a close second).

That's definitely my favorite of the casting drafts I've participated in. So many great choices, especially with OUATITW.

Why not start in February and keep it to once a month?

One a month sounds convenient, maybe two a month to be special on some occasions.

How do we feel about a two-a-day 70s redux in Feb and then TV in March?

It's looking like the Feb draft could start on the 13th, so we'd have a break.

I don't think I could do more than one a month. I'm a nightowl by trade and on Pacific Time to boot.

I guess TV draft is next, but 70's redux has me excited to revisit the 80's. Maybe as kickoff to Summer?

I was thinking we should try Action Heroes at some point.

Both of these are seconded.

Let's continue with the 70s and do 'Rock Bands'.  The critieria is that the band had to release at least one album and tour at least once in the 70s.
