Jupiter Hell got funded on Kickstarter yesterday. It's the successor to the awesome and fun DoomRL from the same team, and looks like my kind of thing. Hoping it turns out good!

Any other Shenmue fans out there? The Kickstarter-backed second sequel looks like it's coming along real nicely

I didnt take part in the KS, but im glad to see its been made and they are taking their time with it.

My KS wait is killing me is Bloodstained (Castlevania fan here!), but I have all the respect for Igarashi and his team being straightforward about the development and the time they are taking to make sure the game is up to their promises.

Seems a lot of KS backed developers have learned from the failures of the system and other projects.

Looks like a more expansive version of DBD, although I wonder if having only one stalker will be a huge detriment. One of the things I like about DBD is having a variety of different stalkers with different abilities.

Not really my thing but it might be of interest to another Chewer; there's a multiplayer mech game that's just released into Early Access on Steam called Heavy Gear Assualt. It's thirty bucks but Massively OP is giving away keys so people can play the Early Access for free (which I'm sure will please those who put down their hard-earned cash two days ago!)

CES 2017 is happening.

Nvidia & AMD had their time to shine this conference. Nvidia spent an hour and a half hilariously trolling everyone who was expecting a 1080 Ti unveiling. They were more happy espousing AI cars, Nvidia Spy dots you can litter your house with to turn your house into an AI, and declaring humans unfit to drive cars. They're currently rolling in that fat facebook/NSA cash pile right now. AMD built up the hype with a mysterious countdown clock for Vega, and then promptly rolled out limp dick youtubes this morning offering nothing. Given Intel just released an uninspired Kaby Lake i7 7700k processor yesterday they could have at least made some waves with a proper Ryzen presentation. Nope.

Do you have $9000? Are you jacked up on steroids doing a montage set to Xzibit music? Go lol at those puny macbook or surface book laptops? Fuck yeah, here you go:

Acer Predator has the beast for you. 64 gigs of ram. 4 speakers plus one subwoofer. 21" curved screen. A mechanical keyboard. And two 1080 gpu's sli'd. Jesus fuck.

Not to be outdone. Razer unveiled a laptop prototype too, check out this shit:

Like all razer products, this will probably last a 2-3 weeks before mechanically breaking apart.

For me I think this may have been the gaming winner of CES:

Asus ROG 27" monitor. It features a 4K IPS Gsync screen running at 144hz. MSRP is around $1200 and due in the third quarter. Will probably take two Titan XP's to make use of it effectively. Just a stinker this isn't bigger, like 32 inches.

The only other notable CES thing is HDMI 2.1: Capable of 8k & 10k resolutions with 120 Hz refresh rates, HDR technology, pushing 48 GB/second, and game mode adaptive refresh rates which hopefully means actual gsync/freesync functionality we see on pc's now. Not sure if that's something the new PS4 Pro can do out of the box, but maybe that's something Microsoft has planned for the Scorpio update later this year.

In older news, this is what it sounds like when Dovs cry. Is everyone at Oculus just a garbage person? Palmer is down with gamergate alt-right racist fucks and freely gave them piles of money. Now, another Oculus higher up likes to give piles of money to underaged prostitutes. What next, John Carmac is outed as an necrophiliac animal sodomizer? Dov Katz gets arraigned tomorrow with $125k bail.

That... That was fucking great....

Maybe it's about time I got back into Elite Dangerous. I've been telling myself that for a damn year, but I think I've finally been sold.

Other than a few minor blips here and there (largely to do with how their expansions were sold to the existing player base), the Elite Dangerous guys are really doing Early Access correctly. Once they start updating their planets, I'll probably spend most of my weeks in that game.

Its an scripted cutscene, but it seems its not triggered per se; it seems some players have encountered in other parts of the game, and so on.

Basically, you are yanked out of hyperspace, think you are in for a confrontation with an enemy ship, and then this happens.

Personally, I think it works like gangbusters in portraying the shock and helplessnes of the experience (annd hell, that UFO/Alien ship is absolutely bizarre and organic looking, which makes its contrast with the hard sci-fi aspect of the game even bigger)

I thought it fit because its the developers suddenly pulling this into the game; there have been hints, ruins and lore in game, but this is a huge, sudden and unexpected move.

And the game is constantly being worked on and updated with new content like this.

EDIT: From BBC.Com

Quote:
After years of waiting, a player of the Elite Dangerous game seems to have encountered its mysterious aliens.

Gamer DP Sayre recorded a video of his encounter with a massive, flower-shaped organic craft late on 5 January.
Other players of the space exploration and trading game have grabbed videos of similar meetings in deep space.
The encounter ends a three-year hunt by players for signs of belligerent aliens known as Thargoids that featured in the game's earlier versions.

Hidden hints
Hints about the eventual appearance of Thargoids have been dropped regularly since the game launched in 2014. Strange objects floating in space and structures found on isolated moons and planets have revealed clues about the location of the aliens.

In an official statement, Elite creator Frontier Developments said: "We are currently investigating reports of unusual sightings around the Elite Dangerous galaxy, but we are otherwise unable to comment on galactic rumour and speculation."

DP Sayre's encounter took place when he was travelling between star systems using hyperspace. His ship was pulled out of hyperspace with all its instruments and weapons rendered useless. As he was drifting in space a massive organic shaped ship appeared, scanned his vessel and then jumped to hyperspace.

Attempts by Mr Sayre and others to follow the ship proved fruitless. Other Elite players who shot at the ship when they encountered it got no response.
Many of the ships that met the alien vessel appear to have been carrying "unknown artefacts" as cargo. These objects are thought to be the work of non-human species and were rarely seen during the early days of the game.
The artefacts have been appearing with more frequency in the game and analysis of what they do links them to a star system called Merope which in Elite's lore is considered to be the home of Thargoids.

Elite Dangerous is a space trading and fighting game set in a massive simulation of the Milky Way
post #1015 of 1048

Like Fett said, it's such a distinctly Lovecraft look. SO alien and unique.

Definitely gonna pick the game up in the next month or so.

The NES Mini just got a fuckton awesomer. Meh, 30 games, fuck that shit. I needz 67 moar games pleeze.

Picking those extra games was some sophie's choice shit. Obviously Battletoads, Bionic Commando, Blades of Steel, and other childhood essentials made the cut, but after about 40 I started deleting stuff out of the directory and getting pickier. I might see if I can go back and refine it even more after browsing other people's lists around the internet.

So.

NES Classic Edition ships with the following:
Quote:
Balloon Fight
Bubble Bobble
Castlevania
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Double Dragon II: The Revenge
Dr. Mario
Excitebike
Final Fantasy
Galaga
Ghosts'n Goblins
Gradius
Ice Climber
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventure
Mario Bros.
Mega Man 2
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden
Pac-Man
Punch-Out! Featuring Mr. Dream
StarTropics
Super C
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Tecmo Bowl
The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

What essential NES classics do you add?

Arse Technica Broke the story first here.

Actual magic happens here, with a rudimentary fumbling around of instructions. Of which you'll need to download a recently created tool called "Hakchi2" which does all the work. Collect your roms you want, it's advisable not to go over 60 games or you start getting errors (67 is the current known cap with the tool). Boot the NES into its debug FEL mode. Plug it into your pc, and then click the buttons to start the transfer. The Hakchi2 tool gives pop up prompts every step of the way so it's not too hard to do this. My only recommendation is double check the official NES Mini games list vs the roms you want to install, don't waste any slots on duplicate versions of the games.

Edited to add: Various folk have been testing the consequences of adding a shit ton of games to the unit. The more you add, the less save states you can use; and you'll eventually start running into C8 errors. I've restored mine to factory conditions and am re-choosing what I'll be adding, keeping my limit to 30 extra games instead of going crazy with 67 selections like I did yesterday.

Any interest in Conan Exiles when it releases to Early Access this week guys?

The survival sandbox promises to make for some funny stories of clan versus clan fuckery to read about, but I could pass on playing it.

I don't like survival games and a Conan game where you don't play Conan seems anathema to me.

Now, give me a Witcher-esque single player ARPG where you actually play Conan. Stealing valuables, slaying snake priests and banging hot ladies...then we'll talk.

I'll probably be picking it up although a lot depends on word of mouth.

I've seen you playing it, RD. What are your opinions? Is it worth my time? I hear penis size is just one of the customization options!

I figured I'd do a comparison for anyone who's thinking of jumping into 4K/HDR waters with consoles or PC.  This isn't perfect -- I can't take screenshots of this game with HDR -- but I took a couple photos of Resident Evil 7.  The top photo is without HDR, while the bottom photo is the exact same moment with HDR turned on.

Just to give you an idea of what it does.

It's very early days yet but I'm really enjoying it. Yes it's first and foremost a survival game so there's lots and lots of resource gathering and keeping an eye on hunger and thirst, but I'm playing on my own single player server and you can tweak basically any and all parameters of the game to your liking, so how hectic and grindy you want to make it is basically up to you. What may keep me here though is what brought me here; the game feels nice and "Conan-ey". Im not a huge survival game guy, but I am a role player and immersion junkie and this is, so far at least, the closest Ive gotten to running around in Hyboria. There's no real story per se other than what you make yourself, but they seem to be intent on scattering a lot of lore throughout the map in the form of ruins and dropped journals and the like to satisfy the Conan fans like myself that will no doubt give this a try.

Im still very much early game as I've been restarting a bit as I tweak different settings and try out the online multiplayer servers option (I think I'll be sticking to single player tho, as Im a cranky old bugger and don't fancy the idea of being tea-bagged by a twelve year old), so there's still a lot to discover and the game is still obviously in Alpha form, tho I'm pleasantly surprised at how stable and smoothly it's been running for me. All in all, for the reasonable asking price, I'd say I'm happy with my purchase so far and look forward to seeing how the game evolves over it's next twelve months until final release.

If you've already lost yourself to Rust or Ark or whatever you may not find a whole lot new here yet, but if you're a fan of the world of Robert E Howard, there's the beginnings of something here that could end up being pretty darn cool.

Now I'm off to watch some tutorial videos on youtube to see if there's anything I'm missing as far as rules and systems go before no doubt restarting yet again.

Oh and PS - yes the floppy dongers you can adjust the size of on your character if you've set the game to full nudity is pretty hilarious. The physics engine makes it jiggle and flop about a lot and I'm a forty year old ten year old so it's made for some hearty chuckles on my behalf.

Every negative on review of this since launch has been bitching about servers and connecting being shit. If I don't have to deal with that, cool.

Yeah it just gives you the option to play on your own on the game map - I think it's still online, but it is a separate "single player" option in the game menu as opposed to "play online" for those of us not as interested in the whole "getting ganked and all your shit nicked"-kinda online play.

I guess it shows how naive I am when it comes to these types of games. I hear something like this announced and my thoughts instantly go to working together with others to build great cities and survive the hostile elements together, creating a sense of teamwork and companionship in the face of adversity.

In truth, you spend half your time running away from twelve year olds wanting to loot your corpse.

Sony are making the Playstation 4 Great Again.

The next major firmware update will include external drive support up to 8tb. Thank fucking god. Getting annoyed having to juggle installs on my 2tb ssd and deleting stuff when newer titles launch. Having a 5tb external WD Black on my Xbone1 is so great in comparison.

Also planned, custom wallpapers and 3D Bluray PSVR support.

Not mentioned in the blog is a performance boost on the PS Pro that doesn't require a patch. Videos have been leaking online about games like Just Cause 3 which was unplayable garbage to this:

The somewhat janky Evil Within looks like this now:

And I don't have to keep harassing CDPR on Twitter to fix their shit, Witcher 3:

External HDD support, finally! I've still got the 1TB drive I got at launch, and yeah, the juggling's a pain. There's so much stuff I probably would've gone back to if I hadn't needed to constantly clear space.

Wow the frame rate improvement on Evil Within makes it look playable!

It shipped unpolished. I couldn't finish it at one point because the performance of the game would just make me stop playing.

“Asking ‘when will you rage?’ has never been more relevant”: Rock Paper Shotgun interviews White Wolf's lead story guy on the upcoming Werewolf: The Apocalypse game.

Quote:
You will play the werewolf. You will play the monster. We’re in pre-pre-pre-production so I can’t talk about details, but the basic questions are: “When will you rage? When will you use violence? When will you have had enough?” But there’s an important follow-up, which is, “what is the price of changing the world through violence?” Those two questions go hand in hand.

Part of the IP is for the werewolves themselves to question whether it’s at least partly their fault that the world is as it is, because they’ve used violence to solve problems in the past. That is on their shoulders. The balance between gnosis and rage is a super-interesting thing to play with. These things have mechanical effects; it’s not just light side and dark side. It affects how long they can maintain their forms, or how they can work with spirits.

There will be scenarios like, you meet a bunch of loggers: do you rip their heads off or do you actually listen to them and realise that they have no choice, that their families will starve, that they are unwitting cogs in a machine.

The pack is central too, so some kind of pack mechanic will be involved in this. Whether you’ll be the pack alpha or if you will rotate between characters, we don’t know yet. But we need a pack. We probably need a multi-tribe pack to represent the traditions of the Garou nation. In this world, we can play with the tropes that are the tribes, going against expectations and making sure we don’t end up with the standard RPG party.

“When will you rage? When will you use violence? When will you have had enough?”

For many, too late. For many more, too soon.

Frankly, those loggers are fucked when this game launches and I roll up on them. Not because politics, but because I'm the Goddamn Wolfman, and my first playthrough of an RPG with moral choices is always a test to see how much Maximum Asshole the story can take before it breaks.

I just really hope the game lives up to it's potential cause Cyanide also just brought out Space Hulk: Deathwing and that is a tragic hot mess.

Similarly, I'm reeeeeeeally looking forward to Vampyr and the role-playing choices that is going to inspire.

I have no idea how this one has escaped my notice until now, but it's evident that sooner or later I'm going to have to get a gamepad controller for my PC.

That could actually do a lot to fix my cranky complaining about games whose UIs don't allow me to leverage the gaming mouse that I use now.

Here's a fun bit of trivia: it's possible to get a "game over" in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines by reducing your Humanity score to 0, but just walking up to people and murdering them for no reason stops reducing your Humanity score at 3. You have to get real creative to drop it any further.

Sometimes the writing in them is really good and the stories are genuinely effecting. Look, it ain't XCOM or CK2, but I see them as nice little palate cleansers between "real" games. Also, my fiance isn't into gaming, but she likes to participate with these. It's like you can finally tell the character to not go in there for real, I guess.
