Anti-fascist demonstrators came to the event and were apparently the driving forces behind the fire and fights that broke out.

The way to properly shut Milo up is to punch him in the fucking face like Richard Spencer. Wrecking random shit to shut down his speaking engagements is exactly what he wants.

Yup, haven't seen Richard Spencer since.

Ah, my alma mater (yes, really).  Brings back fond memories.  I can remember a few "bonfire in the street" type demonstrations.

Trump threatened to cut UC Berkeley's funding if they don't "allow free speech".

He's threatening to materially punish universities that make speech-related decisions he doesn’t like...to defend free speech.

What a tool.

Arguments like his are so specious. You don't get offended by what people say to you? Okay then, all power to you. Sounds like you have either an inflated sense of your own esteem or none at all. But whatever: you, as they say, be you.

But requiring that everyone else be the same? Assuming that your way of being meets a higher standard than others? All because you don't want to have to exercise some discretion and consideration and empathy before you open your mouth and say what is on your mind?

That's not free speech. That's just being a bully.

Well the argument isn't that you aren't allowed to get offended it's that just because you are offended the world doesn't come to an end and the person that offended you doesn't owe you anything. Because honestly where does it end? I mean I know there is a line somewhere but ignoring Milo would be the greatest threat to him, believe me.

Ignoring him would be best. But if there were a way to hose him down with scalding hot dogshit...I'd be tempted.

ignoring Milo would be great if that were even really possible

Because now that he does have an audience for his hate speech, simply allowing him to speak at colleges would send a message that what he spouts is normal legitimate discourse.  And what he spouts is actually dangerous now that he has a mainstream audience just itching for it.

It's truly tricky ground here, because yes... Milo thrives on this.  But ignoring him at this point won't work either, I think, and will have other awful effects.

The ignoring would've had to have happened a while ago before he became a name.

And now he's been invited to the White House with press credentials, I think.

All you can do is counter his speech with your speech, that is literally all you can do. You can keep protesting but that feeds him and makes him some kind of rebel. You can keep showing up and rioting but that accomplishes the same. I guess some truly bold individual who cares nothing for his own life could even kill him......and make him a martyr so the next Milo could come around and be more powerful. People worse than Milo have popped up and then faded away.

as schwartz says, protesting IS speech

and actually trying to have a dialogue with Milo and views like his is wasted time.  Because it's not about a good faith exchange of ideas, because the ideas he and those like him are propagating is such hateful illogical nonsense (nonsense that is nonetheless appealing to certain impressionable minds looking for an ethos).  It's more about who's more charismatic/outrageous/scintillating for the times.  As you said, it's just about getting attention.

I'd suggest that protesting is the way to go.  I'd only suggest steering clear of cries for officially banning his appearances since that allows him to paint himself as a martyr for free speech.  But then, this is a guy and a cause that'll use ANYTHING that's available in order to paint themselves as the victim all the while shaming victims for perpetuating victimization as social currency.  So in the absence of cries for barring him from a pulpit, he'd just cry about the protests.  If not the protests, then something else.

just watch any interview with Jared Taylor that legitimately tries to debate his views:

Well I wasn't saying you were going to convince Milo himself.

Neither am I, really.

Like, if the intent is to attend Milo's appearances to provide dissenting views on what he spouts for those who would be interested in attending them... I think that's a losing battle in terms of 'winning the crowd'.  Because I gather that this guy operates like Trump and would simply shout down with a bunch of stagecraft and some cheap-seat putdowns.  And that's operating on the fantasy that he'll even allow that at his own event.

A Muslim police officer in New York has filed a lawsuit over alleged harassment from her coworkers:

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/muslim-cop-files-lawsuit-over-alleged-threats-harassment-nypd-colleagues-n716541

Quote:

An NYPD officer was physically attacked and called a "Muslim bitch" as colleagues attempted to rip off the hijab she was wearing, a new lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court alleges.

Officer Danielle Alamrani, who became a cop in 2006 and converted to Islam a year later, claims in her suit dated Feb. 2 that once she started wearing the headscarf on duty, her colleagues refused to work with her.

In 2010, a sergeant joked in front of fellow officers that Alamrani should not "detonate on patrol," a comment that drew laughter, according to court documents. And on Christmas day in 2012, two officers allegedly attacked Alamrani at the precinct and tried to rip off her hijab, the lawsuit states.

"They were screaming that nobody liked Plaintiff Alamrani while she did this and referred to Plaintiff Alamrani as a 'Muslim bitch' and said 'I will punch you in the face,'" according to the religious discrimination suit.

And:

Quote:

She was also called names like "terrorist" and "Taliban" and was told daily that she was "a disgrace to the NYPD," the suit claims.

Court papers noted that Alamrani received a religious accommodation in 2009 to wear a hijab at work.

Alamrani said she reported the harassment to a supervisor, who notified the department's equal employment opportunity office, but it allegedly kept up even after a complaint was filed, court papers said.

In response to the attack, officers allegedly involved in it were assigned to different shifts, but they all still encountered one another in the station house's common areas, such as the locker room, according to court papers. One of those officers, the lawsuit said, was Alamrani's equal employment opportunity liaison.

The harassment continued, court papers allege, and included one instance in September 2014 when an officer responded to a noise complaint where Alamrani lived in Brooklyn, New York. She and her husband were allegedly arrested, and her children were detained for eight hours.

"During this incident, the responding officer...made numerous comments about Plaintiff Alamrani's religion including that Plaintiff Alamrani's family were '[A]rabs' who 'slept on the floor like animals,'" the lawsuit reads.

Alamrani was placed on modified duty for nine months, court papers said. Unable to take the alleged harassment any longer, she went on early retirement for three months in 2015, until being brought to the 94th Precinct in Brooklyn during that summer.

In November of that year, Alamrani visited the gun range for work reasons and was allegedly photographed wearing her hijab, the lawsuit alleges. That photo was posted on Facebook, and coworkers left comments with profanity, some of them with threats of violence, court papers claim. She was also called a "moving target," the lawsuit alleges.

More than a week later, after protests have roiled residents where the incident occurred, French investigators have reached an entirely different conclusion: The violent sodomy was accidental and occurred when the officer’s expandable baton happened to slip into the victim’s anus.

At the very least, the officers have been suspended.

http://sfist.com/2017/02/12/alt-right_march_planned_in_berkeley.php

Quote:

This should go well! A gathering of "patriots" who support "free speech" will be descending on Berkeley on March 4 to show all those silly liberals what America really looks like. The already offensive flyer shown below promoting the event refers to the organizing group as alt-right "Proud Boys," and they're promising some "special guests" which... god only knows.

...

The Proud Boys movement, now also a popular hashtag, tattoo, and a subreddit, stems from Vice co-founder turned far-right pundit Gavin McInnes, who's now part of the internet-popular triumvirate of alt-right heroes that also includes Milo Yiannopoulos and InfoWars editor Paul Joseph Watson, all shown below in an illustration calling them the "new punk."

While very much sounding like a White supremacist and calling himself "pro West," McInnes also says he's pro-gun, pro-gay, and pro-life, and anti-Nazi, anti-censorship, anti-Drug War, anti-political correctness, anti-Islam, and anti-feminist (although he's also called himself a feminist in the past, but he rails against the "war on masculinity" in the culture). McInnes, and his many fans, also like to say that they are "anti-antifa," which is to say they're anti-anti-fascists — but in this upside-down world of rhetoric they inhabit, this doesn't actually mean pro-fascist per se, it means they hate the "antifa," whom they define as the type of young, militant liberal protesters who showed up to protest Yiannopoulos in Berkeley and wreak havoc in the streets. McInnes has also said that he's "anti racial guilt," which is a popular thing on the alt-right in general, stopping short of saying they're White supremacists. Because they're just "Western chauvinist."

They're also anti-masturbation.  Apparently only the literal kind, though.

A man with connections to white supremacy groups has been arrested in South Carolina after purchasing a gun from an undercover FBI agent.  He wanted to commit an attack "in the spirit of Dylan Roof."

http://www.wmbfnews.com/story/34521384/fbi-arrests-man-allegedly-planning-attack-in-the-spirit-of-dylann-roof?clienttype=generic&utm_content=buffer89ed9&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Quote:
On December 26, 2016, McDowell posted to Facebook a message: “I love love to act what u think,” followed by a link to the Temple Emanu-El Conservative Synagogue in Myrtle Beach, according to court documents. Horry County Police indicated to the FBI that McDowell had established White Supremacy Extremist connections while serving in prison in South Carolina for various criminal offenses. He also had tattoos indicating an affiliation with these groups.
According to the federal complaint document, on January 5, 2017, McDowell posted to Facebook an anti-semetic screed referencing Dylann Roof, which included the statement: "they should be Feasting on the enemy that stole their Heritage and their bloodline and trying to run us off of this Earth you can post pictures of f****** Viking and swords all the s*** you want to post if you ain’t got the heart to fight for Yahweh like dylann roof did you need to shut the f*** up…”

More on this dummy:

Quote:

McDowell went on to say that “I got the heart to do that s***, but I don’t have the good training,” the document states. He told the agent he sought a way to conduct an attack on non-whites without getting caught. He continued: "I seen what Dylann Roof did and in my heart I reckon I got a little bit of hatred and I..I want to do that s***. Like, I got desire, not for nobody else...it just...I want something where i can say, 'I f****** did that'...me personally."

He also discussed his beliefs in white power and indicated a hatred for non-whites. He continued: “If I could do something on a f****** big scale and write on the f****** building or whatever, ‘In the spirit of Dylann Roof.’” McDowell told the officer he had not decided on a place or time to conduct the attack.

Some people can only see dollar signs. Why pay for prisoner care when you can just slaughter them?

Rob Ford was elected mayor of Toronto on cost-cutting. One of his platform issues? A $60 vehicle registration tax. Normally sane Canadian people elected a giant crackhead moron to save $5 a month. What would they do for lowered income tax? Throw their firstborn into boiling oil?

By comparison inmates don't stand a chance.

I recently argued with a local conservative woman (who had plenty of support) on social media advocating for the return of the public hanging.  There is no gray area with these people.  Everything is simply "good" or "bad", and if it's bad, no punishment is too heavy.  Right around the same time some of these same people were arguing that drivers should literally be able mow down protesters if they were blocking their "right to get to work."

There was a meeting of conservatives in Kernersville, North Carolina recently to discuss what to do about a, ahem, Muslim plot to take over the United States:

https://triad-city-beat.com/2017/02/local-conservative-activists-prepare-violent-confrontation-islam/

Quote:
A consortium of tea partiers, patriot groups and other conservative activists gathered in a private dining room at a seafood restaurant in Kernersville on Thursday evening for a presentation on a supposed Muslim plot to conquer the United States.

The 20 or so people who attended the meeting at Captain Tom’s Seafood needed little convincing from presenter Tom Jones, who soldiered through frequent interruptions about supposed Muslim treachery paired with testimonials about preparedness for violent confrontation and even expressions of readiness to kill Muslims.

“Do you have any recommendations as to how we could stop this?” asked Frank del Valle, a Winston-Salem resident whose Facebook page identifies him as a retired federal employee and native of Cuba, near the end of the hourlong presentation. “Because my only recommendation is to start killing the hell out them.”

Del Valle’s outburst spurred a variety of responses from the group.

Robert Goodwill, who identified himself as a member of the national security advocacy group Act for America, took an optimistic tack with the recent election of Donald Trump, adding, “We’re on our way.”

Another man, who did not identify himself, said, “I want to start doing something instead of talking about it all the time.” He added, “I’m in a group. I’m not going to tell you what group I’m in.”

“Talking is going to start the conversation,” Jones insisted. “We all have to find a way to proceed. This is my way of contributing.”

Trump's victory was certainly a big moment for these people:

Quote:

Goodwill continued to try to talk del Valle down, arguing that the tide is turning.

“Political correctness is being thrown away,” he said. “A lot of people are meeting like this. We’re making progress in the positive direction.” He argued for supporting reformers in the Muslim faith, adding, “We need to talk about how we can get things done peacefully. Be ready for the worst.”

“I am beyond that point,” del Valle replied. “I’m ready to start taking people out.”

“I can understand that,” Goodwill said. “But we’re not there yet.”

Earlier in the presentation, del Valle quipped, “Shed some blood, too,” in response to Jones’ call to “shed some light” on the Muslim Brotherhood.

Milo will be the keynote speaker at CPAC: http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/milo-yiannopoulos-cpac-keynote-report-235173?cmpid=sf

This is an event that Mike Pence and Carly Fiorina will attend. CPAC organizers were apparently unable to find a "champion" for free speech who hasn't doxxed transgender students or misattributed quotes to opponents while inviting others to abuse them. Milo's normalization as just another conservative political figure is disturbing as hell.
