My sense was that blu-ray actually saw an increase over DVD, just because the re-mastering for blu didn't need to be as intense. It's pretty much you scan your negative, you encode it at 24fps and you'll get something that the average joe will think looks great. DVD had to have two different framerate encodes for PAL and NTSC, which also led to fuckery with the audio to retain sync, and post-scan clean up was more work due to artifacting and aliasing from the severity of the resolution drop.

Everything went on to VHS because it was all being mastered for tape for broadcast in the first place.

I think, there will be nothing past 4K, not because they can't make the panels. They can and will go to 8K panels, but for the home user it's impractical. You'd struggle to get any material that supports the native resolution. Even at 4K, it's a struggle. Super high bandwidth streams (pretty compressed BTW), movies on drives. 4K is about 100GB per hour. So for 8K you are looking at 1TB for each movie. WTF? So I can see 8K panels being used in computer applications, desktop publishing and CAD stations etc. but beyond that, I don't think it's practical. I'm looking at a new TV for myself now and the only reason I'm even considering 4K is that I want to go about 65-70 inches, and that's pretty much all you can buy.

Bought a new one of the same model from Best Buy: no crosstalk that I can see. Returned the one from Fry's.

My advice: don't buy your TVs from Fry's, guys. Though if you really want to, I can attest that the open box LG OLED55C6P at the Burbank Fry's has a flawless 2D picture (to my eyes, anyway) if you really want an OLED for cheap (though it might still be cheaper to get a new one from Best Buy, since they're 1799 in-store right now).

[edit]After watching Guardians of the Galaxy: Yeah, night and day difference from the other one. I'm kind of angry at myself for almost thinking that the way it was was acceptable.

Fucking Fry's.  Their employee commission policies have created a breeding ground of scum and villainy.  Among my poor experiences:

1.)Sales people arguing over who gets to "ring me up" and get the commission, as I was purchasing big ticket items from different departments (they eventually asked me to pay in two separate transactions, which I didn't mind because one was business and one was for home).  It was pretty awkward.

2.)I had to return a very expensive printer as it turned out to be a piece of shit in every way possible and the recommendation from the sales person was inappropriate.  They first tried everything possible to disallow the return, even though it had been less than one week.  They opened up all the packaging to try to claim that it wasn't all there or the item was damaged.  Laughs on them, I hadn't even bothered unwrapping anything but the printer itself.  They then called over THE SALESPERSON WHO HAD SOLD ME THE PRINTER AND HE TRIED TO TALK ME OUT OF RETURNING IT.  I'm like, "fuck you," this is an office workhorse printer and it has a 100 sheet capacity, you straight-up lied to me that it was 500 sheets.  He then sat in line with me, and when I tried to get a refund tried to insist that I was only allowed to get store credit.  Sorry Vishnu, I already purchased a replacement on Amazon.  The guy gave me the stink eye the entire time we waited in line and were at the register.  Literally just looked at me with murder in his face for about five straight minutes.

3.)On what I swore would be my last visit, someone helped me grab some (again, expensive) electronic equipment.  He then refused to give me my cart with the items in them.  Just refused.  Instead he began pushing the cart and following me around the store.  Finally I told him this was ridiculous and I was going to be a while, so he took the cart and went To the registers to guard it and wait for me.

I went to Fry's a few months ago. Man alive, their DVD/Blu-ray selection is an endangered species now.

Well, a certain amount of obsequious fawning is appreciated, but I also demand competency.

The one time I worked at any kind of place like that as a salesperson, I was told I was a horrible salesperson and was fired..

I like to imagine the convos in the Fry's breakroom...

"Wait, you waited in the returns line with him?"

"Yep. I can't believe you pushed his cart around and then took it upstairs."

"Next time, I'm going to jump on the hood of his car as he leaves the parking lot."

Holy crap, that's devious, especially the IP address part. These tech companies will do anything for a buck.

Thankfully my 2012 model was only briefly connected to the internet at my old house, and I never did any firmware updates on it, so I should be safe from having my frickin pixels scanned.

Hey, I had one of those!  Great bang for the buck.  They discontinued it and for a few months before they vanished from shelves you could snag a 73 inch TV for under a grand.

I got mine in July of 2010 for $1400

And just yesterday I finally replaced the bulb with a new one from Mitsubishi itself.

WHOOO, I'd been using the thing SO dim!  I was surprised it hadn't burnt out during the 6 years.  I used it quite a bit.

I've actually never had any trouble returning stuff at Fry's, but I always come in ready for a fight because of horror stories like this. This was the first (and last) time I'll be buying a TV from them, that's for certain. Back to being the 'I have an immediate need for a PC component' place.
